Understanding Personal Care
Personal care — help with washing, dressing and intimate routines — is the area where dignity matters most. Here is how good personal care should feel.
What personal care includes
Personal care covers respectful assistance with everyday routines: washing and bathing, dressing, personal hygiene, toileting, and getting ready for the day or for bed. At Carekind at Home, I provide this support with the utmost respect for privacy and personal boundaries.
Dignity comes first
Good personal care is never rushed and never impersonal. It means asking before touching, letting you lead, closing doors, and always working at your pace. Because you see the same carer at every visit, trust builds naturally — and with it, the confidence to accept the help you need.
Preserving independence
The goal of personal care is not to do everything for you, but to do only what you cannot comfortably do yourself. If you can manage part of your routine, your carer will encourage and support that independence — standing by, rather than taking over.
Talking about it openly
Many people feel embarrassed discussing personal care, and that is entirely understandable. A good carer will make these conversations easy, matter-of-fact and free of judgement. Nothing should ever be sprung on you — every element of personal care is agreed in your care plan first, and reviewed whenever you wish.
